Keep the Light On
Beginning Aug. 8, Empire State Building (ESB) will celebrate the countries competing in this year’s Olympics by lighting each of the four sides of its famed tower - north, south, east and west - the colors of participating countries’ flags each night throughout the summer games. This marks the first time ESB has split the tower’s sides with four separate countries’ lights in its history. For the 17 nights of the games, the monumental lightings will honor the top 66 countries participating in the Olympics, based on the number of athletes attending from each country. For 17 straight nights, the ESB electricians will be working around the clock to change the 182 floodlights that will make the world-famous ESB tower glow in each country’s colors! COME FOR GRAFFITI, STAY FOR THE SHOPPING
Art in Action, an exhibition of the work of five celebrated New York graffiti artists will be on display at Lord & Taylor’s flagship store July 9–27. In keeping with the spontaneous nature of the medium, Wilfredo Feliciano, aka BIO, Hector Nazario, aka Nicer, Sotero Ortiz, aka BG 183 and the twins Raoul Perre, aka How, and David Perre, aka Nosm, will complete the installation of their murals live in the Fifth Avenue windows of the New York landmark the morning of July 9. The murals displayed at the Lord & Taylor windows depict a dazzling mix of graffiti forms and fashion imagery in the brilliant colors typical of the genre’s attention-grabbing style. The five artists are members of Bronx-based TATS CRU, a group of New York professional muralists whose work in aerosol has transformed graffiti into an art form as well as an advertising medium.

American Museum of Natural History features "The Horse", a charming and illuminating exhibition opening on Saturday - May 24th, 2008
Without horses, where would we be? Trousers might never have become fashionable. The violin might never have come into existence. The Aztecs might have thrived another few centuries.
The Industrial Revolution might have sputtered out before its time. No one would have to get off his high horse, and no political race would have a dark horse candidate. The American Museum of Natural History features "The Horse", a charming and illuminating exhibition opening on Saturday.
The opening festivities will include demonstrations of horseshoeing and horse grooming; an appearance by Thumbelina, a creature billed as the world’s smallest horse (17 1/2 inches tall); and a visit by a vintage horse-drawn ambulance. But the exhibition itself relies far less on country fair spectacle and far more on a provocative history of the ways in which humans and horses became, as the show says, “powerfully linked.” Those links may be as slight as fashions in clothing (trousers, we are told, developed specifically for the riding of horses) and as important as the fate of empires (“Next to God,” Cortés is supposed to have said about the conquest of Mexico, “we owed our victory to the horses”).
