New York (October 2009): In an exclusive cover story scoop in the October issue of IN New York magazine, actor/musician John Stamos talks Broadway, breaking up (with Rebecca Romjin) and moving on, as he goes from the small screen to the Great White Way in Bye Bye Birdie (in previews, opens Oct. 15 at Henry Miller's Theatre).
"I was so naïve when I made my Broadway debut. I had no idea how hard it would be to fill someone else's shoes. I was a real dummy," says Stamos, who's playing Albert Peterson, a role made famous by Dick Van Dyke in the original and the 1963 movie. He's previously replaced headliners in shows like How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying and Cabaret, but, with his biggest theatrical role to date, the one-time teen idol—who played a heartthrob on General Hospital, a cool uncle on Full House and a dreamy doctor on E.R.—finally feels like he's come into his own as an actor. "I didn’t want Full House to be the thing on my tombstone—'Here lies Uncle Jessie.' "
Professional success is converging with personal growth for Stamos, who's learning there’s life after Rebecca Romjin. The man who once locked arms (and lips) with Demi Moore, Paula Abdul, Heather Locklear, Sheryl Crow and Denise Richards says, "Albert has to eventually grow up and commit to his girlfriend, Rosie Alvarez [Gina Gershon], and those are the things I'm dealing with in real life right now, too."
