New York (March 2010): In an exclusive cover story in the March issue of IN New York magazine, Vanessa Williams discusses all her roles, from super mom to singing in the Roundabout Theater Company’s new musical revue Sondheim on Sondheim.
Born in New York City and raised in the suburbs, Williams always had her eye on Studio 54. “When I was a teenager, I tried to get into Studio 54, but they always rejected me,” she recalls. This month the Emmy, Tony, and Grammy nominated actress can be found on stage at the legendary disco-turned-theater performing composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s music from such shows as Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Company, Follies, Passion, West Side Story and A Little Night Music.
Of course Williams is no stranger to the streets of New York these days as she commands the world of fashion on screen in the ABC-TV sitcom Ugly Betty, currently finishing up it’s fourth and final season, and takes in the sites with her family in her off-time, “We love to do traditional things, like go to Radio City Music Hall and the Empire State Building,” she says.
