New York (June 2010): With his sultry accent, and Southern gentleman charm Harry Connick Jr. has had New York City swooning for years. This July he will woo the city again with a 13-night engagement, Harry Connick Jr. in Concert on Broadway (July 15-29) at the Neil Simon Theater.
Connick is no stranger to New York, having moved here at age 18 to pursue his passion for music. “…All my heroes went to New York and recorded for Columbia Records—Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Wynton and Branford Marsalis” says Connick of his decision to leave the South.
A wise decision it was—in the years since Connick has charmed his way in to New Yorker’s hearts and crooned his way into three Grammy Awards, one Emmy Awards, and two Tony Award nominations. The multitalented performer made his way from wowing critics at the Oak Room at the Algonquin, to recording the iconic song “It Had to Be You” for the When Harry Met Sally soundtrack in 1989. He has sold more then 25 million copies of his two-dozen releases to date, and racked up a large number of acting credits as well, not to mention picking up Tony Award nominations for writing the music and lyrics for Thou Shalt Not (2002) and starring in The Pajama Game (2006). Looking forward to his next Broadway engagement, Connick says, “I haven’t decided exactly what this show is going to be, but since it is New York I want to do something special.”
